Looking to makeover your home with some splashes of colour? If you want to ensure your home decorating is effortlessly on-trend, you’re in the right place.

We’ve looked over our paint sales data, analysing the top colours and the biggest increases in popularity to highlight five shades that are a must throughout the home in 2024. From making a statement with rustic orange shades to keeping it pretty with pink, here are the five trending wall paint colours you should consider this year.

What Are the Trending Colours for 2024?

Whether you’re planning a feature wall, adding some depth with accents, or want a full home makeover, you can use our paint colour finder tool or explore our top recommendations for inspiration.

1. Copper

Looking at our data, copper emerged as the most up-and-coming colour choice for the home – copper paint saw a huge 57% increase in interest this year. While rose gold saw a 19% decrease in popularity, the more subtle-toned copper came out on top, reflecting a growing trend towards natural shades.

If you’re looking to add some copper tones to your home, living spaces, bedrooms, hallways and even bathrooms all suit this warm shade. If you don’t want to commit to the full copper glow, an accent wall is a great way to bring this trend into your space while keeping it understated.

2. Blush Pink

Fresh off the back of the success of the Barbie movie, blush pink has made a solid comeback around the home. This pretty shade has grown an incredible 38% in interest, making it second on our list.

The most popular shade when it comes to pink is ‘Blush Pink’. This pale, natural pink is verging on a neutral shade, making it a great alternative to your usual white and cream base tones. This shade is warm and inviting, making it perfect for bringing a feminine, soft touch to any room in the house.

3. Black

After the shimmering and gentle tones of copper and pink, we’re also seeing home decorators embracing the dark side – black paints have surged in popularity, with a 34% increase.

Black is commanding attention across the interior landscape, offering a twist on traditional wall and accent choices. Google searches also show a huge 350% increase in interest for the term ‘matte black paint for wood’, showing that many homeowners are looking to make a bold statement with contrast, and are using black to add depth and character to the home. To get on top of the trend, try using black as an accent on doors or trims, or go bold with an all-black feature wall.

4. Green

As well as green paints increasing 29% in interest this year, we also found green reigning supreme throughout the entire home – from kitchens to living rooms, the shade remains a top choice across the house. The most popular shade is ‘Fresh Herb’, a versatile, pale grey-toned green.

If you’re looking to bring colour to your kitchen but don’t want to go too bold, ‘Fresh Herb’ is an excellent choice to create a rustic, country-style with kitchen paint. Looking to make more of a statement? Take it darker with a deep green shade like ‘Everglade Forest’.

5. Orange

Our insights brought up a surprising contender for the fifth trending shade – orange, which is up 27% in interest! However, the orange of the moment is subtler and more natural, in the form of burnt oranges and terracottas.

We found a growing interest in Dulux’s ‘Frosted Papaya’ when looking at bathroom paint in particular. This peachy terracotta shade is great for bringing warmth and depth to your bathroom, helping to create an inviting and relaxing space. It’s also great for warming up hallways or as an accent on the wall around a fireplace.

What Do These Colour Trends Tell Us?

While we’re seeing a variety of different colour choices increasing in popularity, they all have one thing in common – they’re all natural in tone. The oranges and greens soaring in popularity have nature-inspired hues, while blacks, pinks and coppers are great for creating a subtle highlight, lowlight or accent in the home.

To learn more about why these tones are so popular, we spoke to Niloufar Esmaeilpour, MSc, RCC, SEP from Lotus Therapy, who explained the psychology behind the shades.

Niloufar explains:

“Green is reminiscent of the natural world, promoting a sense of tranquility and rejuvenation. This is particularly appealing in today’s fast-paced, digital world, as it provides a subconscious escape to nature, which is calming and restorative. Studies suggest that green can improve concentration and enhance creative performance. This makes it an ideal choice for home offices, living spaces, and any area where focus and creativity are desired.”

Niloufar also discussed the increase in warmer copper and terracotta shades, saying:

“The uplift in copper and terracotta shades can be attributed to their warm and welcoming hues. These shades are known for their ability to uplift moods and promote a sense of optimism. Incorporating them into bathroom designs can help start the day with a positive and energised outlook.”

Expert Explains How to Use Colour Psychology in the Home

If you’re planning a home makeover and want to consider the impact of colour, Niloufar offers the following advice:

“When considering colour psychology for home decor, it’s important to think about the function of each room and the mood you want to create:

  • Personalisation: Colours should reflect the personalities and preferences of the home’s inhabitants. Personal connections to certain colours can influence mood and well-being more significantly than general psychological effects.
  • Lighting and space perception: Colours can alter the perception of space and light. Light colours make rooms feel larger and brighter, while dark colours can create a sense of intimacy and sophistication.
  • Cultural and contextual influences: The psychological impact of colours can vary significantly across different cultures and personal experiences, so it’s important to consider these aspects when choosing colours for a home.”
