Homebase has taken a look at this year’s most popular Christmas trends, and how to bring them to life in the most energy (and cost) efficient way.

Gatsby Glam

The roaring twenties got off to a slightly muted start with Christmas parties curtailed due to the pandemic, with the worst behind us it’s time to get back into the swing of things.

Interior

Go for Gatsby levels of glam this Christmas, and deck your home in as much glitz, glitter, and glam as you can before the sparkling soiree season arrives.

This is the perfect trend to take you right through the festive season until it’s time to ring in the new year with friends. This decorating trend is party perfect, stick on a jazz playlist and mix up some classic cocktails to bring the roaring 20s back to life.

Table

Set the table for decadent dining with a liberal sprinkling of gold and silver star-shaped sequins, statement champagne glasses, and vintage-style art deco candles.

Tree

Bejewel your tree with beautiful luxe glass baubles, kitsch champagne decorations and both silver and gold stars.

Aim for a palette of night sky navy, mixed with splashes of duck egg blue and a mix of metallics and bright white LED lights for some festive decadence.

Exterior

Make like Gatsby and guide your guests to the party, this LED shooting star decoration will welcome arriving party goers with style.

Energy Efficient

This vintage trend lends itself well to candlelit dinners, and cocktails at home. Glass baubles and glitter reflect light around the room meaning you need fewer fairy lights to make this trend twinkle.

Eco-Cosy

This planet-friendly take on festive hygge encapsulates all the warm nostalgic glow of a traditional Christmas.

Aesthetically this trend has all the hallmarks of a cosy country gathering but with a thoroughly modern eye on sustainability.

Interior

Think lots of comfy textures, natural floristry and sustainable materials.

For maximum cosiness and warmth cover sofas with a cosy natural throw, perfect for snuggling up for a Christmas Eve movie.

Invest in a charming reusable wooden advent calendar, a decoration in its own right, that will become a much-loved family tradition and cut down on Christmas waste.

Table

Sprinkle your table with cloves and baked orange slices for a spicy Christmassy scent. Three simple pillar candles work well as a waste-free centrepiece that can be re-used long after the decorations have been packed away.

Tree

For decorations the more sustainable the material the better, natural wood, rattan, pinecones, and rope. All in classic Christmas shapes, and because it just wouldn’t be Christmas without any fairylights keep it energy efficient with warm copper string LED lights.

Exterior

Make your own wreath with holly and pinecones collected from a winter walk, see our wreath-making guide here for tips and advice

Energy Efficient

One of the most energy-efficient Christmas trends there is. If you stick to a single strand of LED fairy lights then you can decorate your home this festive season with almost zero excess energy use and without sacrificing the festive atmosphere.

Woodland Winter

The winter woodland trend is set to have a huge moment this Christmas, and it’s easy to see why.

It’s perfect for all ages, hitting all the right notes for a tasteful, sustainable Christmas with its focus on wood and natural materials, yet whimsical enough for small children to experience the magic of their surroundings.

Interior

This is not just about the visual elements but the smell as well, bringing the outside in should be a treat for all the senses. Use scented candles or these scentsicles to amp up Christmassy feelings.

Tree

This trend is all about woodland critters, for tree decorations think the cast of Animals of Farthing Wood.

Foxes and red squirrels are an especially popular choice, their orange coats contrast nicely against the green natural pine branches.

However, the star of the show in 2022 is none other than the wise owl. We will be seeing owls everywhere this festive season! Hanging a few of these feathered friends around your tree is an easy way to bring your Christmas decorating bang up to date.

Table

With so much else going on in this trend, you can afford to keep table decorations simple. Forage some moss, twigs and pine cones and arrange them on a large plate around a festive candle for an easy but attractive winter woodland centrepiece.

Exterior

This outdoor LED Fox decoration will bring all the magic of Christmas forest encounters to your garden.

Energy Efficient

It can be a balance between creating a magical Christmas for children but being mindful of energy usage and cost. Replacing older decorations with more energy-efficient LED ones and using a timer plug can help you get the balance right.

Merry Maximalism

Forget minimalism, this time of year more is more. This trend is about throwing off the shackles of convention, so put away the tasteful colour palette and embrace your inner child.

Interior

Give your home a Santa’s Grotto vibe with cute gonks, striped candy canes and gingerbread men, Nutcrackers, fake snow, and clashing colours. Welcome into your home the true spirit of Christmas – cheerful, colourful chaos!

Tree

Get creative with tree decorations of different colours, textures, shapes and sizes. Get all the family involved in picking out their favourites and choosing where they go, there are no rules! It goes without saying that for this trend multicoloured twinkling lights are a must-have, LED of course to save energy.

Table

At this table everyone is welcome, use your imagination as well as plenty of coloured foil sprinkles to create a fun table for everyone, these nutcracker nesting dolls are the perfect centrepiece.

Exterior

Don’t be confined to the house, let the playfulness spill into the garden with fun neon decorations in classic Christmas shapes.

Energy efficient

Can you go all out without blowing the budget on electricity before the big day? With smart choices, you can!

Install timer plugs for all mains-generated light-up decorations and replace old energy-inefficient decorations with new low voltage and energy-saving LED ones.
