How To Fit A Sink Waste To A New Sink

Whether you’re installing an entirely new sink or replacing an existing bathroom sink waste it’s good to plan ahead – especially if you’re fitting it yourself. This can save you time and money but needs a little research if it’s your first attempt. That’s what this guide is all about, giving you the tool list and instructions to fit your bathroom sink waste seamlessly. But first let’s take a look at what a bathroom sink waste is.

What is a bathroom sink waste?

A bathroom sink waste is the metal piece of equipment fitted in the bottom of your sink. It allows water from your sink to run safely into the pipes with no leakage, avoiding any damage to your bathroom floor and pipes. It’s also used to catch hair, dirt and other pieces of debris that could block your pipes, working somewhat like a sieve for your bathroom sink.

Some bathroom sink wastes have a ‘push down’ or detachable plug so you can easily fill your sink. They’ll also include a trap so you can clear the pipe more easily. Great for retrieving any large items like jewellery that have accidentally fallen down the drain.

Choosing the right bathroom sink waste

You may have already chosen your bathroom sink waste, or be in the market for one. If you’re in the latter camp, here’s our range to get you started. • An adjustable spanner
  • A tap back-nut spanner
  • Silicone sealant with gun
  • An adjustable wrench

How to fit the sink waste

We’ve written out a step-by-step here for you to follow, but feel free to use this video for visual guidance on how to fit a bathroom sink waste. It’s easy to follow, especially when combined with the steps below.

Step one:

Disassemble your bathroom sink waste and apply a bead of silicone around the plug hole to create your watertight seal.

Step two:

Push in your new sink waste and the black washer to create a tight seal. Be sure that any slots are facing the correct direction to attach your waste to the wall.

Step three:

Apply another bead of silicone around the underneath of your sink, and push tightly on the other black washer.

Step four:

After wiping away any excess silicone with a cloth, screw the hexagonal nut onto the underside of the bathroom sink waste.

Step five:

Fit the trap and let the silicone dry before then checking for any leaks by running the tap. No leaks? Job well done.

Congratulations!
