How To Design A Bathroom

Stylish bathroom

Whether you’ve got Pinterest boards full to the browser with ideas, or you’ve no clue where to start, we’re here to help you design the bathroom of your dreams.

We know all the decisions you need to make to design a bathroom can feel really overwhelming or it can often feel like you’ve missed something important. But with a list and a little planning, a bathroom that’ll put a smile on your face for years to come isn’t so out of reach.

Here are our main considerations for how to design a bathroom:

Match your era

The first thing to think about when you’re thinking about how to design a bathroom. It’s a good idea to look at the era your home was built in and match the style at that time. For example, a period terrace may look great with a vintage Victorian bathroom suite. A sixties home might benefit from some mid-century furnishings and accessories. And a new build would suit a more modern design.

Choose a colour scheme

Even if you choose to have a bathroom design consultation, have a think about the colours you love. Do you prefer nice and neutral whites and beiges, lots of bright pops of colour, or a more classic black and white design? Once you’ve got this nailed, you can match your accessories, fixtures and fittings.

Add some art

Small decorative touches can make a big difference when it comes to how to design a bathroom. A frame here and a decorative plant pot there can really bring your bathroom to life and elevate the space. Similarly, towels and soap dishes or even toilet brushes and bins – little things make a big difference.

Talk about tiling

While little things make a difference, it’s obviously important to get the big stuff right too. There are lots of considerations when it comes to bathroom tiles. Big slabs that are easy to clean, or small delicate tiling that looks intricate and beautiful? Tiles all the way to the ceiling crease, or halfway to save on cost? Lots of colour and patterns or plain and simple?

It’s good to order samples of wall and floor tiles to see if they work well together, or visit a store that has a bathroom design consultation. Keep in mind how your choices will stand up to wear and tear. While white grout may seem great in theory, it shows up mildew easily if not cleaned regularly.

Find your flooring

Speaking of wear and tear, flooring takes a big hit in the bathroom. For this reason, most people opt for waterproof tiles or vinyl. If you are thinking of something a little different, for example wooden floors, make sure you invest in a good varnish so it’s tough against constant water exposure. The size of your space can also hugely impact on price, especially with more decorative expensive tiles.

Plan your space

The size and shape of your space can have a huge impact on your design altogether. It’s good to measure up exactly what you can fit in before thinking about fixtures and fittings. You may also be restricted by electricals, structure or things like waste pipes and other plumbing.

Explore your fixtures

Once you’ve got the lay of the land you can think about fixtures. Roll top bath or walk-in shower? Pedestal sink or vanity unit? Vintage toilet or something more modern? There’s a lot to think about, but a great way to decide is by matching your choices to your lifestyle. For example, a bath may be more suitable for those who have lots of pets or children.

Ask the design experts

If all else fails, sometimes it’s easier to ask the experts, especially when it comes to how to design a bathroom layout. At your bathroom design consultation our experts may just think of something you haven’t to make all the components of your dream bathroom a reality. With years of knowhow and expertise they’re the ones to ask.
