Product Information

Redcurrants are tart fruits, delicious in pies, jellies and wine-making. A bush can produce fruit for up to 20 years. The leaves are palmate, with 3-5 lobes which are bluntly toothed, which grow spirally around the woody stem. The flowers are small, yellow to green in colour and grow on hanging racemen, called strigs. The plant normally flowers between April and May.

  • Heavy cropping varieties
  • Berries from July through August
  • High performing varieties
  • Excellent flavoured varieties

Additional Information

Fruit is produced on the previous year's stems (fruits in year 2). Redcurrants are self-fertile. In winter prune and remove any dead wood and low-lying shoots, then all side shoots (stragglers) by cutting them back to one to three buds from base. In early summer, prune new growth back to two buds to keep the plants compact. Leaders (young growth), should be pruned to outward-facing buds unless the branches are bending, in which case they should be cut to upward-facing buds. This pruning should not remove fruit, as fruit develops mainly on the older wood, not the current season's growth.
