This clematis prefers its roots to be in cool, moist, well-drained soil in a sheltered position away from cold winds and also benefits from the protection of a sunny, south facing wall or fence. Keep the roots protected during the winter with a thick mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure. Once established, prune after flowering.
