These plants produce luxurious, bell-shaped blooms from summer through to early winter and are well-suited to withstand varied weather conditions. Penstemons are known to attract pollinating insects with their nectar-rich flowers, making them an excellent low-maintenance choice for reliable and stunning results, year after year.
To get started, pot up your penstemon plug plants and nurture them in a frost-free environment until they are well-established. Pinch out the tips of new growth while the plants are still small; this will encourage a bushier habit. Once they have developed, gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days before planting them directly into your garden borders or patio containers.
Penstemons thrive in a sunny or partially shaded location with fertile, well-drained soil. Once established, they can tolerate drier soils but dislike heavy soils that are particularly cold and wet during winter. To improve heavy soils, incorporate plenty of coarse grit before planting.
