Finding and fitting a replacement toilet seat needn’t be a job for the plumber. To find the perfect fit you just need a few simple measurements and to decide on your preferred shape, material and type of hinge. From how to measure a toilet seat to tips on choosing a soft close toilet seat that fits your toilet properly, this handy guide contains everything you need to know.

How to measure a toilet seat

Finding a toilet seat that fits perfectly is easy – you just need three straightforward measurements.

  1. Using a tape measure, measure the seat’s length from between the fixing holes to the front centre of the toilet bowl.
  2. To find the width of your seal, measure across the widest point.
  3. Finally, measure the length between the two fixing holes. The industry standard is 155mm, but occasionally this can vary. This measurement will need to be the same on your toilet and toilet seat so that the two can be attached.

Choosing a toilet seat

When deciding on your replacement toilet seat you need to consider the shape, dimensions, material, and type of fixing.

1. Shape

Look at the shape of your toilet bowl. Is it oval, D-shape or square? Your seat will need to match for a seamless fit.

2. Material

Next, consider what material you would like your toilet seat to be made from. Each has its own advantages, and the best fit for your home will depend on your budget and individual preferences.

Plastic

  • Polypropylene is recyclable, lightweight and offers break-resistant flexibility
  • Duroplast has the appearance of ceramic and is long-lasting and durable. It also has antibacterial properties and is scratch-resistant

Wooden

  • Moulded Wood is made from compressed wood that is encased in lacquer
  • Solid wood toilet seats , made from natural materials, are traditional looking with a classic feel.
  • MDF (medium density fibreboard) is an easy maintenance composed/compressed wood-based fibre
