Grow English lavender plants in well-draining soil, choosing a position in full sun. Lavenders thrive in full sun and dislike wet ground, especially during winter. Improve heavy soil by incorporating coarse grit or sharp sand before planting. When planting English lavender in large patio containers, use a well-drained soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Prune after planting to encourage bushy growth. Water regularly throughout summer until established, after which they become reasonably drought-tolerant. Immediately after flowering, prune back to within 2cm (1") of the previous year’s growth to maintain a compact, well-shaped plant.
