As the saying suggests, a tidy space really does mean a tidy mind. No bedroom is complete without good clothes storage, and a wardrobe is the best way to keep your space clutter-free with all your favourite outfits in one easy-to-find place.
Having great storage is particularly important in smaller bedrooms, where space is at a premium. There are all kinds of important things to consider when buying a new wardrobe. With decisions to be made about size, style and even the internal storage configuration, it can be tricky to know where to start.
From our favourite wardrobe ideas for small spaces to how to measure a wardrobe for a perfect fit, we’ve put together this guide to give you a helping hand.
How to Measure a Wardrobe
Finding the perfect fit is essential when it comes to buying a new wardrobe for a smaller bedroom. You want to avoid blocking radiators, protruding too far into the room, and doors that will obstruct entrances and walkways when opened.
If you are replacing an existing wardrobe, use a tape measure to find its depth, width and height and find a model with the same dimensions. Alternatively, measure the available space surrounding your wardrobe to see whether you can afford a little extra width or height.
If you don’t already have a wardrobe in place, the first thing to do is to decide where to position one. If you have a particular wardrobe in mind, find out its dimensions and mark the depth and width on your floor. Check that there’s enough space to move around freely and that the height won’t interfere with any hanging lights.
If the room in front of your wardrobe is limited, sliding doors are a great space-saving option.

Although there are no standard dimensions for wardrobes as it varies between models and manufacturers, a wardrobe is typically 50-60 cm deep. Picture the width of a coat hanger, with a little extra room either side.
When sizing up your space for a new wardrobe, don’t forget to measure the depth when any doors and drawers are open too – you don’t want them to bang against other furniture or block your space.
Wardrobe Door Ideas
When it comes to wardrobe doors, there are three types to choose from: sliding, hinged or no door at all. The best fit for you will depend on style preferences, as well as your available space.
Hinged wardrobe doors are by far the most common. From modern white gloss to more traditional shaker styles, finding a finish that suits your interior décor couldn’t be easier. Many of our models can be completed with handles of your choice, whether you prefer the antique appeal of beaten brass or sleek stainless steel.
If you're in search of wardrobe ideas for small spaces, then sliding doors offer concealed clothes storage without taking up valuable floor space when open.
To recreate the feel of a walk-in wardrobe, opt for an open storage unit.
