Unrivalled colour and impressive resilience make azaleas a must-have for any garden. These dwarf azaleas are incredibly hardy, evergreen shrubs that burst into life each spring, showcasing vibrant colours as their blooms smother the foliage, often partly obscuring it. Their slow-growing, compact nature makes them ideal low-maintenance features for acid borders, patio containers, or pots when using ericaceous compost.
Boasting glossy evergreen foliage and show-stopping spring flowers, these azaleas offer year-round interest. For best results, plant in moist, well-drained, acid soil enriched with well-rotted organic matter. Choose a spot with semi or dappled shade, sheltered from harsh, drying winds. While many azaleas tolerate a sunny location, ensure the soil remains consistently moist. In alkaline soil conditions, opt for patio containers or pots with a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
When planting, avoid planting too deeply. Water regularly throughout the growing season, preferably using rainwater, as tap water's lime content can reduce soil acidity over time. In spring, feed with a slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. Protect from cold winter winds, and apply an autumn mulch to border-grown plants to shield their shallow roots from winter cold.
