Enhance your garden with this Thompson and Morgan Fig 'Violette de Bordeaux' or 'Negronne', supplied as a bush in a 2.5 to 3-litre pot. This particularly hardy fig variety, with origins tracing back to 17th-century Versailles, has a proven track record in UK gardens and a long history of reliable garden performance. Enjoy the aromatic, small purple-black fruits, renowned for their exquisite flavour, with two harvests annually – one in summer and another that matures the following year, especially with winter frost protection.
Ideally, plant fig trees in a sunny, sheltered spot, such as a south-facing wall. They thrive in moisture-retentive, fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Enrich the planting area with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost before planting. While figs are vigorous growers, their size can be managed by planting in a container, which can then be submerged in the soil. For container planting, use a well-drained compost like John Innes No.3, and repot every two years. For wall-trained figs, install support wires before planting. Water regularly, particularly in hot, dry weather.
Feeding is minimal; a spring mulch of well-rotted manure or compost at the base suffices. Expect a height of up to 3m and a spread of up to 4m when fully grown. Supplied as 1 x Fig ‘Violette de Bordeaux’ or ‘Negronne’ bush in a 2.5 to 3-litre pot. Growing and care instructions are included. Note: images are for guidance only; results vary with growing conditions and seasonality (e.g. deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months).
