Product Information

  • Supplied as a packet containing 200 seeds
  • Swede grows up to 30cm high and 25cm spread
  • Hardy variety suits even poor soil and full sun

Bring a burst of colour and ease to your vegetable patch with Thompson and Morgan Tweed Swede Seeds, rewarding even first-time gardeners with globe-shaped roots that boast a striking two-tone flesh of deep purple and creamy beige. You'll find it thrives in less-than-perfect soils, needs little fuss and promises a reliable harvest from late autumn, making it ideal for busy home growers. With up to 200 seeds per packet, you'll enjoy a generous crop that's hardy, easy to sow and a perfect addition to your kitchen garden. Sow in late spring and early summer to enjoy these delicious crops in late autumn. Direct sow swede seeds outdoors from May to June. Grow Swedes in a weed-free, sunny position in non-alkaline, light, fertile, well-drained soil that has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow swede seeds thinly at a depth of one centimetre in drills 30cm apart. Germination will usually take seven to ten days. When large enough to handle, thin out the seedlings within each row to 23cm apart. Water swede regularly, particularly during dry periods, to prevent skins from splitting. Hoe between rows to reduce weed growth. Swedes require a long growing season and will not mature until the autumn. Harvest swede from October to December, lifting individual swede as and when required. At the end of the year, any remaining roots should be lifted to prevent them from becoming woody and stored in damp peat for winter use. Ideal For: Kitchen Garden. Hardiness: Hardy. Position In: Full sun. Height: Up to 30cm. Spread: Up to 25cm. Images shown are for guidance only of the expected results from plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary the results. Images may be included to illustrate supply, but can vary due to seasonal changes (e.g., deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months).
