Montana' Strawberry is a compact, ornamental variety, producing pretty white flowers. This plant yields aromatic, sweet fruits in May, June and September – perfect for enjoying fresh from the plant, still warm from the summer sun. Certain parts of these flowers are also edible. Reaching a height and spread of 20cm (8"), plant in autumn or late spring in a sheltered, sunny spot with well-manured, free-draining soil. Plant strawberry runners 45cm (18") apart in rows spaced 75cm (30") apart, spreading out their roots and ensuring the crown of the plant is just above the surface. Avoid planting too deeply, as this may cause them to rot. Alternatively, grow in hanging baskets or specially designed strawberry planters on the patio.
