Trained into a smart lollipop shape, the popular evergreen Photinia ‘Red Robin’ makes a striking formal statement in any garden. Compact and easy to maintain, this standard form simply requires an annual trim to retain its neat, rounded shape. A reliable and unfussy, award-winning variety, it thrives in sun or partial shade and tolerates almost any soil. The glossy evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, with the brightest colour appearing in spring and early summer as the young leaves emerge a vibrant red.
Perfect for gardens of all sizes, this standard tree looks fantastic in a large patio container, or as a symmetrical feature either side of a doorway or steps. It also adds structural contrast when planted in borders among flowering plants.
Grow Photinia plants in a sunny or semi-shaded spot, in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Before planting, enrich the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost. Plant at the same depth as the plants were in their pots, backfill the planting hole, and water well to settle the soil. If planting in containers, use a soil-based compost. Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, mulch with well-rotted manure or garden compost. Once established, Photinia requires little attention.
