Bring a burst of sunshine to your garden this spring with these golden flowering shrubs! Supplied as bareroot specimens, they're ideal for creating stunning spring borders or adding a touch of elegance to patio containers. The large, tulip-shaped flowers, borne on columnar stems, bloom late in the season (April to the end of May), minimising the risk of frost damage.
Naturally developing into a medium-sized tree, this magnolia makes a superb focal point for any sunny or partially shaded garden. It offers low-maintenance colour and structure, year after year. If space is a concern, it can be easily pruned to maintain your desired shape and size. Expect a height of 4m (13’) and a spread of 2.5m (8’).
Plant your magnolias in a sheltered spot, enjoying sun or partial shade, away from harsh winds and late spring frosts. They thrive in rich, moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. Before planting, enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, mixing it in thoroughly. To help your magnolia establish quickly, ensure its roots are shaded. After planting, mulch with rotted bark chips, manure, or garden compost, being careful not to mound it around the stem. When growing magnolia 'Sunspire' in a patio container, use a blend of ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3. Water regularly throughout the growing season until the young plants are well-established. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted bark chips or garden compost to the base of the plant.
