Product Information

  • Compact evergreen shrub for shade
  • Red buds in winter open into fragrant flowers
  • Ideal for patio and garden

Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ is a popular, compact evergreen shrub, ideal for adding year-round colour to borders and patio containers. This robust and easy-to-grow shrub is perfect for both novice and experienced gardeners, thriving even in neglected, shady garden spots. The male clone showcases rosettes of glossy, aromatic leaves, adorned with red buds throughout winter, which burst into potent, fragrant white blossoms by springtime.
For optimal growth, plant Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ in a partially or fully shaded area with moderately fertile, rich, well-drained soil that is neutral to acidic in pH. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf yellowing. Alternatively, use a soil-based compost like John Innes No. 3 mixed with ericaceous (acidic) compost when growing in large containers.
Minimal pruning is needed; simply trim lightly after flowering to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged growth.
Perfect for patios, cottage, scented, wildlife, low-maintenance, and woodland gardens. This hardy shrub thrives in dappled shade or full shade, reaching a height and spread of up to 120cm (47.2in). Please note that depending on the timing of your order, flowers may not be visible in the first season.
