- Bright red flowers attract pollinators
- Produces long, smooth green pods
- Ideal for freezing and exhibition
Scarlet Emperor runner beans: A vibrant variety boasting striking red flowers and smooth, green pods reaching up to 3m in length. Perfect for exhibition and freezing, these beans are a rich source of Vitamin C, folate, iron, and fibre. Attract pollinating insects by growing them alongside sweet peas. Sow indoors from mid-April for transplanting, or directly outdoors from late May to July. For indoor sowing, use 7.5cm pots or trays filled with free-draining compost, planting seeds 5cm deep. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C until germination (7-10 days). Once germinated, gradually acclimatise seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before planting in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, sheltered from strong winds. Water regularly, especially during flowering, and feed every fortnight during midsummer. Pinch out tips when reaching support height. Harvest regularly from July, picking young beans for optimal quality and yield. A superb choice for freezing. Hardiness: Half-hardy. Position: Full sun. Height: Up to 300cm. Spread: Up to 30cm. Each packet contains 50 seeds. (Image shown is for guidance only; results may vary depending on growing conditions).
