Grow your own delicious, colourful rhubarb with Thompson & Morgan Runner Bean White Lady Seeds, offering reliable harvests well into the later season thanks to its low oxalic acid content, making it ideal for tarts, pies and jams. This hardy perennial is easy to grow and features varied stem colours that add visual interest to any garden, while clear growing instructions ensure a smooth start for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. To grow, sow rhubarb seeds individually from March to April at a depth of 1.6mm (¼") in good quality seed compost, placing them in a propagator at 20–25°C (70–75°F) or sealing pots in a polythene bag until germination, which typically takes 21–40 days, keeping the soil damp but not waterlogged. Once seedlings emerge, lower the temperature and gradually harden off in a cold frame before planting out in late spring in a sunny position with well-drained, fertile soil enriched with well-rotted manure and cleared of weeds. Transplant carefully to avoid root disturbance, spacing plants 1m (3ft) apart. During the first year, avoid harvesting to allow the plant to establish properly, removing emerging flower heads in spring; from the second year onwards, harvest stems from April to June when leaves are fully unfurled by pulling and twisting them from the base.
