For best results, plant roses as soon as possible after delivery in an open position in full sun, with well-drained, fertile soil that hasn't recently hosted roses. To avoid the risk from the build-up of harmful soil organisms and disease, ensure the planting position meets these requirements. Enrich the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost before planting, and add a handful of granular fertiliser to the planting hole. Regularly feed and water the rose plant, and deadhead spent flowers to encourage further blooming. Remove any suckers that appear below the graft union. In late summer, prune by removing dead, diseased, rubbing, or damaged wood, then reduce the stems. Finally, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant after pruning.
