Lettuce 'Winter Gem' gives you small, crunchy crops and is perfect for sowing from September to January, so you'll always have fresh leaves for your table. Each packet contains 150 seeds, and with regular sowing, you can keep a steady supply going through the colder months. Just sow in moist, fertile soil, keep seedlings protected and watered, and enjoy reliable harvests up to 20cm tall and wide.  Direct sow lettuce seeds in an unheated greenhouse or cold frame into well-prepared, fertile, moist soil in sun or semi-shade. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of one centimetre in drills 30cm apart in soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 30cm apart and cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Make regular sowings for a constant supply. Water lettuce frequently and hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing. Ensure that adequate ventilation is maintained in order to prevent the spread of fungal diseases.
