- Peach buds open to pale yellow blooms
- Compact evergreen, great for pots
- Hardy and low-maintenance shrub
Rhododendron Barnaby Sunset is a neat, compact dwarf hybrid, somewhat unusual in its upright habit. This evergreen shrub is covered with small, glossy leaves throughout the year, providing year-round interest. In April, a profusion of pretty, funnel-shaped, play yellow flowers emerge from peachy buds, creating a delightful display. Ideal as a specimen plant for spring borders, woodland gardens, or patio containers.
For best results, grow in moist, well-drained, acidic soil enriched with well-rotted organic material. Choose a sheltered position in semi or dappled shade, away from cold, drying winds, although many dwarf Rhododendrons tolerate a sunny spot if the soil remains moist. In alkaline soils, grow in patio containers using ericaceous and soil-based composts. These are surface rooting, so avoid deep planting. Water regularly throughout the growing season, ideally with rainwater to maintain soil acidity. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser for acid-loving plants and protect from cold winds during winter. Mulch in autumn to protect shallow roots, avoiding piling mulch around the stem. Lightly prune in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size if needed.
Ideal for patios, low-maintenance gardens, as specimen plants, and in woodland gardens. Hardy. Position in sun or semi-shade. Reaches a height and spread of up to 120cm.
