Thompson & Morgan Red Azalea Dwarf Plant in Pot 9cm

For vibrant colour and remarkable resilience in your garden, look no further than azaleas. These dwarf varieties are hardy, evergreen shrubs that burst into life each spring, becoming enveloped in a profusion of blooms that often partially obscures their foliage. Slow-growing and compact, these azaleas are low-maintenance options for acid borders and patio containers, thriving in ericaceous compost.
With their glossy evergreen leaves and spectacular spring flowers, these azaleas provide year-round interest. For best results, grow in moist, well-drained, acid soil enriched with well-rotted organic matter, in a position with semi or dappled shade, sheltered from cold, drying winds. While many azaleas tolerate a sunny spot, ensure the soil remains consistently moist. In alkaline soil conditions, cultivate them in patio containers or pots, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Avoid planting too deeply and water regularly during the growing season, ideally using rainwater to prevent lime from reducing soil acidity. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. Shield plants from harsh winter winds, and apply an autumn mulch to border-grown plants to protect their shallow roots from winter cold, being careful to avoid piling the mulch too close to the stem to prevent rotting. Position in sun or partial shade.
