Bring a touch of the exotic to your garden or conservatory with the Canary Island Date Palm. Also known as *Phoenix canariensis*, this architectural specimen boasts magnificent, stiff leaves that elegantly arch from its short trunk.
Ideally suited as an evergreen focal point in a heated conservatory due to its need for year-round frost-free conditions. It thrives in containers and can be moved to a warm greenhouse during the winter months. This undeniably impressive palm has been awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.
When grown in containers, expect a height of around 1.5m. However, when planted in glasshouse borders, it can reach up to 5m tall with a 3m canopy, creating a truly stunning display.
Plant in containers or sheltered borders with fertile, moist, well-drained soil in partial shade. For patio containers or pots, use a loam-based compost such as John Innes No. 2 or 3. Select a container only slightly bigger than the supplied nursery pot, and repot into progressively larger pots as the plant grows. Water and feed regularly during the establishment period. In winter, move container-grown plants to a frost-free location and keep the compost relatively dry. In milder regions, plants in sheltered borders may survive outdoors if offered some winter protection with horticultural fleece.
Palms require minimal pruning; simply remove dead or damaged foliage from the lower trunk in spring. Remember to wear gloves during pruning for protection, as the foliage may irritate the skin. Caution: Foliage may be irritant to skin.
