Product Information

  • Evergreen palm for year-round garden appeal
  • Well suited to grow in containers
  • Ideal for pots, borders, and conservatories

The Canary Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis) makes a striking architectural statement, its stiff, elegantly arching leaves rising from a short trunk. A prized evergreen, it thrives in frost-free conditions, ideal for a heated conservatory or as a container plant. Reaching 1.5m in containers, it can soar to an impressive 5m with a 3m canopy when planted in a glasshouse border. This RHS Award of Garden Merit winner prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil in semi-shade, flourishing in loam-based compost like John Innes No.2 or 3 when container grown. Choose a slightly larger container than the nursery pot (1.5-litre supplied), repotting into progressively bigger ones as it grows. Regular feeding and watering are key during establishment. Winter care involves moving container plants to a frost-free location, keeping the compost drier. In milder climates, sheltered outdoor planting with winter protection (horticultural fleece) is possible. Minimal pruning is needed; remove dead or damaged lower foliage in spring, wearing gloves to protect your skin from potential irritation. Images shown illustrate mature plants; results may vary due to growing conditions and seasonality.
