- Produces pure white blooms with sweet scent
- Attracts bees and pollinators
- Grows up to 3m tall and spreads up to 2.5m
Philadelphus 'Virginal' is a hardy deciduous shrub that deserves pride of place in your garden borders. In early summer, its fully double blooms unfurl, displaying pure white petals and releasing an exquisite 'orange blossom' perfume. Like all Mock Orange shrubs, this stunning variety is nectar-rich, attracting bees and other beneficial insects.
With its vigorous, upright habit, Philadelphus makes a useful large shrub, ideal for wildlife and woodland gardens, and it even copes well in coastal locations. Grow in a sunny or semi-shaded spot, in any well-drained soil. Before planting, enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. Plant at the same depth as it was in the nursery pot, backfill the planting hole, and water thoroughly to settle the soil. Water regularly throughout the growing season until fully established.
In spring, mulch the base of the plant with well-rotted manure or garden compost. Little pruning is required; after flowering, cut back stems to a healthy bud and remove approximately one-fifth of the old stems to ground level.
Position: Sun or Partial Shade.
Height: Up to 3m.
Spread: Up to 2.5m.
