For optimal growth, pot up penstemon plants and nurture them in frost-free environments until well-established. Encourage bushier growth by pinching out the growing tips while the plants are still young. Prior to planting outdoors in borders or patio containers, acclimatise well-developed plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Penstemons thrive in a sunny or semi-shaded location with fertile, well-drained soil. Once established, they can tolerate drier soils, but they dislike heavy soils that remain cold and wet during winter. Improve heavy soils by incorporating plenty of coarse grit before planting.
