How to Grow: Choose a warm, sheltered, sunny location—ideally south-facing—and plant in fertile, well-drained soil. When growing in containers, use a pot at least 50cm (20in) wide with John Innes No.3 compost. Before planting, enrich the soil with well-rotted compost or manure and water in well. Stake the tree in advance if training as a bush or attach support wires for fan-trained specimens. Maintain a weed-free area of 30cm around the base. Apply mulch in spring to retain moisture and water thoroughly during dry periods. Feed regularly through the growing season. Prune only in April to avoid silver leaf disease, shaping the tree and removing any damaged or crowded growth.
