The Musa Basjoo Japanese Banana is a striking evergreen perennial, reaching heights of up to 5 metres and spreading to 4 metres at maturity. Its large, paddle-shaped leaves arch gracefully from the main trunk, creating a dramatic display. In summer, drooping cream-coloured flower spikes appear, sometimes followed by attractive, though inedible, green fruits. This plant thrives outdoors in frost-free conditions, in moist, well-drained soil, and tolerates full sun or partial shade. For optimal growth, ensure deep planting of the rootstock for protection. Cultivation under glass or in a polytunnel, using a loam-based compost, is ideal.
