Bring the warmth of the Mediterranean to your garden with this fruit collection. These plants can reach a height of up to 300cm (118in) and a spread of 250cm (98in). Citrus trees thrive in patio containers with a mix of ericaceous compost and a neutral, soil-based compost, such as John Innes No. 3. When repotting, maintain the original soil level, firm well, water generously, and position in a frost-free, sunny spot.
Fig trees flourish in sheltered, sunny locations, ideally a warm, south-facing spot against a wall. They prefer moisture-retentive, fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Before planting, enrich the planting hole with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. To restrict their vigorous growth, create a 60cm (2') square, open-bottomed pit around the root system, adding a 15cm (6") layer of broken stone at the base. Alternatively, plant figs in large patio containers using a well-drained compost like John Innes No. 3, repotting every two years. For wall-trained figs, install support wires before planting.
