- Brings colour and a sweet fragrance
- Flowers fade they are replaced by bunches of purple berries
- Grow in borders or containers
An excellent RHS AGM variety, this Mahonia boasts clusters of slender flower spikes, bringing colour and a sweet fragrance to the garden during the colder months. A superb hardy shrub for those tricky shaded spots, it brightens even the darkest corners. As the flowers fade, bunches of purple berries appear, complementing the holly-shaped, evergreen leaves that provide year-round interest.
Commonly known as Oregon Grapes, this plant encourages bees and other pollinating insects, making it perfect for adding year-round interest to your garden. Plant in borders or containers using rich, fertile, well-drained soil, in full sun or semi-shade. While hardy, Mahonia plants benefit from a sheltered position away from cold, drying winds. Incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the soil before planting. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until established.
Little pruning is needed, but a trim in spring after the winter berries have fallen can remove any damaged or diseased stems and lightly shape the plant.
Culinary note: The ripe fruits, though too acidic to eat raw, can be stewed with sugar or other fruits for jellies or pies, enhancing milder fruit flavours or creating a lemonade-like drink. Young leaves can be simmered in water and eaten as a snack.
