Introduce a touch of the exotic to your garden with Lily Tasman, a statuesque tree lily boasting gigantic pink flowers. Each petal is adorned with a striking deep pink stripe that gracefully fades to white at the edges, creating a breathtaking display. Plant these bulbs en masse around your patio or at the back of a sunny border to create a stunning focal point.
Tasman is known for its easy-to-grow nature, requiring minimal staking while providing fabulous scent and vibrant colour throughout July and August. While the blooms are perfect for cut flower arrangements, remember to leave at least a third of the stem intact to nourish the bulb for the following year.
These lilies thrive in a sunny or partially shaded location, appreciating their roots kept cool and shaded while their heads enjoy the sun. Plant in moist, free-draining soil that is either acidic or neutral, and has been enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. When planting in containers, use a loam-based compost. Container-grown lilies should be divided and repotted with fresh compost every other year.
Plant bulbs approximately 15cm apart, at a depth three times their height. This deeper planting helps protect the bulbs from excessive heat. Ensure regular feeding and watering throughout the growing season. After flowering, deadhead the faded blooms where they meet the stem to prevent seed pod development. Reduce watering after flowering and, for container plants, move to a frost-free location over winter. Lilies planted in borders can be left undisturbed in milder climates, provided the soil doesn't become waterlogged.
