Introduce a touch of elegance to your garden with Lily Primrose Hill. These bulbs produce stunning white flowers, each petal marked with a lemon flash at the centre and delicately ruffled lilac edges. Growing tall, this tree lily variety makes a breathtaking focal point, whether planted en masse around a patio or as a backdrop to a sun-drenched border.
Primrose Hill lilies are remarkably easy to cultivate, requiring minimal staking and offering a delightful fragrance and vibrant colour throughout July and August. While their blooms are perfect for cut flower arrangements, remember to leave at least a third of the stem intact to nourish the bulb for the following year.
For optimal growth, plant in a location that enjoys either full sun or partial shade – lilies thrive when their roots are shaded and their heads are in the sun. They prefer moist, free-draining soil that ranges from acidic to neutral, enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. When planting in containers, use a loam-based compost such as No. 3. Container-grown lilies should be divided and repotted with fresh compost every other year.
Plant the bulbs approximately 15cm apart, at a depth three times their height, as this deep planting helps protect them from excessive heat. Water and feed the plants regularly during the growing season. Deadhead faded flowers where they join the stem to prevent seed pod development. After flowering, reduce watering and move container plants to a frost-free area for the winter. Lilies planted directly in the border can remain in place in milder climates, provided the soil doesn't become waterlogged. In colder regions of the UK, lift, clean, and store the bulbs for winter.
