Easy to cultivate, Primrose Hill requires minimal staking and rewards you with fabulous fragrance and colour throughout July and August. While these lilies make stunning cut flowers, remember to leave at least a third of the stem intact to nourish the bulb for the following season.
For optimal growth, plant in a sunny or partially shaded location, ensuring the roots are shaded and the heads are exposed to the sun. Lily Primrose Hill thrives in moist, free-draining soil that is slightly acidic to neutral, enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. When planting in containers, use a loam-based compost like John Innes No. 3. Container-grown lilies should be divided and repotted every other year with fresh compost.
Space bulbs 15cm apart and plant at a depth three times their height, as deeper planting helps protect the bulbs from heat. Feed and water regularly during the growing season. Deadhead spent flowers where they meet the stem to prevent seed pod development. Reduce watering after flowering and move container plants to a frost-free area over winter. In milder regions, lilies in borders can remain in place, provided the soil doesn't become waterlogged. In colder areas of the UK, lift, clean, and store the bulbs for winter.
