For optimal growth, Oriental lilies thrive in moist, free-draining soil that is neutral to acidic and rich in organic matter. Enrich the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost before planting. When planting in containers, opt for a loam-based compost. Plant the bulbs at a depth approximately three times their height and spaced 15cm (6") apart in a sheltered, sunny spot.
Throughout the growing season, consistently feed and water your Oriental lily bulbs, ensuring the soil remains moist. When cutting flowers for indoor arrangements, leave a third of the stem intact to nourish the bulb for the following year. During winter, reduce watering and relocate container-grown lilies to a cool, frost-free location. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost in spring. Every other year, divide and repot container-grown lilies into fresh compost.
