Bring a touch of the exotic to your garden with these towering giant lilies, which grow taller each year as the hardy bulbs return in spring. This variety stands tall on its own, requiring minimal support.
Ideal for sunny borders or large containers on the patio, where you can fully appreciate their fragrant scent throughout the summer. Reaching a height of 180cm (71”) and spreading to 45cm (18”).
Supplied as 20 bulbs, size 14/16. Oriental lilies thrive in moist, free-draining soil that is neutral to acidic and rich in organic matter. Before planting, enrich the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost for the best start. When planting in containers, use a loam-based compost such as John Innes No. 2.
Plant lily bulbs at a depth of approximately three times their height and 15cm (6") apart. Deep planting helps protect the bulbs during hot weather. Choose a sheltered, sunny location where the lilies can enjoy sunshine on their heads and shade on their roots.
Water and feed oriental lily bulbs regularly throughout the growing season, ensuring the soil remains moist at all times. Deadhead faded blooms at the base of the flower where they join the stem to prevent seed pod development. When cutting flowers for indoor arrangements, leave a third of the stem to nourish the bulb for the following year.
After flowering, leave the stems intact until they turn yellow in autumn. Reduce watering and move container-grown lilies to a cool, frost-free location over winter. Lilies grown in borders can be lifted, cleaned, and stored for winter, but in milder areas, they should survive outdoors if the soil isn't too wet. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost in spring. Divide and repot container-grown lilies into fresh compost every other year.
