Small leaves form dense cover on spreading branches, while summer sees nectar-rich blooms drawing pollinators and autumn welcomes glossy black berries that birds adore. Hardy and wind-tolerant, it’s a robust choice for wildlife-friendly gardens, offering reliable growth even after harsh winters and needing only light pruning to keep it looking its best. How to Grow: Plant in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Tolerates a wide range of soils, including sand, chalk, and clay. Free-standing shrubs require minimal pruning; remove dead, damaged, or diseased growth each spring. Trim formal hedges in May and August. Mulch with 5cm of well-rotted compost or manure after pruning. New growth returns quickly in spring, even if foliage is lost in severe cold.
