A charming cottage garden favourite, this dwarf 'Barnsley Baby' Mallow is a compact and floriferous delight, ideal for patios or smaller gardens. Expect admiring glances from neighbours thanks to its well-branched form and profusion of soft pink blooms, which are also irresistible to bees and butterflies. Once established, this Lavatera requires minimal upkeep and exhibits good drought tolerance.
Start plug plants in pots, nurturing them in frost-free conditions. As the plants mature and the threat of frost has passed, gradually introduce them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant into borders or containers filled with moist, well-drained soil in a sunny spot. When planting in containers, use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. During the establishment phase, provide regular feeding and watering. Mature plants need only occasional attention.
The best time to prune is in the spring, after the last frost and as buds begin to swell. Cut back all stems firmly to approximately 30cm above ground level. Be aware that Mallow can be slow to show new growth in spring; be patient with plants that appear dormant, as they may still be viable.
