- Easy to grow drought tolerant and reliable
- Aromatic evergreen silver foliage
- Fragrant purple flowers attractive to pollinators
Lavandula angustifolia is known for its masses of dark purple-blue fragrant flower spikes, ideal for cutting and drying, atop compact green-grey evergreen foliage. This neat English lavender is particularly attractive to bees due to its nectar-rich flowers. With its compact, bushy habit, Lavandula angustifolia makes an excellent low hedge or path edging, and it looks equally attractive in cottage borders or patio containers. Very easy to grow and undemanding, requiring little maintenance, it thrives in free-draining soil in full sun, disliking wet ground, especially in winter. Improve heavy soil by adding coarse grit or sharp sand before planting. When growing in large patio containers or pots, use a well-drained, soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. After planting, prune to encourage bushy growth and water regularly throughout summer until established, after which it becomes reasonably drought-tolerant. Immediately after flowering, prune back to within 2cm of the previous year's growth to maintain a compact, well-shaped plant. Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible, perfect for making lavender sugar or lavender and mint jelly. Position in full sun. Height: Up to 45cm. Spread: Up to 60cm. Supplied in 9cm nursery pots, delivered with growing and care instructions. Images are for guidance only; results may vary depending on growing conditions. The image may be included for illustration of supply but can vary due to seasonal changes and may not be the exact variety. Do not be alarmed at tired, discoloured or weathered appearances; this happens naturally at colder times of the year.
