- Attracts bees and butterflies with highly fragrance
- Drought tolerant and reliable
- Full sun in borders or containers
This compact, neat variety of English lavender is ideal for growing your own plants, boasting masses of dark purple-blue flower spikes perfect for cutting or drying. Its nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, while the green-grey evergreen foliage forms a compact, bushy habit, making it excellent for low hedges or path edging. Equally attractive in cottage borders or containers on the patio.
Very easy to grow and undemanding, it requires minimal maintenance. Plant in free-draining soil in full sun, as these plants dislike wet ground, especially in winter. Improve heavy soil by adding coarse grit or sharp sand before planting. When growing in patio containers or pots, use a well-drained, soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. After planting, prune to encourage bushy growth. Water regularly throughout summer until established, after which it becomes reasonably drought-tolerant. Immediately after flowering, prune back to within 2cm of the previous year's growth to maintain a compact, well-shaped plant.
Culinary note: some parts of these flowers are edible, perfect for making delicious lavender sugar or lavender and mint jelly.
