Sow seeds from April to early June in a well-prepared seedbed, placing them 12mm deep in drills spaced 23cm apart. Transplant when the seedlings are large enough to handle, typically about five weeks post-sowing, ensuring a spacing of 50cm each way. Firmly plant the seedlings and maintain adequate moisture until they are established. This crop thrives in well-drained, moist, rich soil, so it is essential to protect them from caterpillars and aphids as needed while also netting against pigeons during the winter months.
