Watch your garden come alive with colour-changing blooms all summer long, as this Hydrangea paniculata adds a unique touch to your borders. These tall plants begin with white flowers, which gradually transform to pink as summer progresses, creating a captivating display in mixed borders.
Hydrangea paniculata thrives in a sunny or semi-shaded location, sheltered from harsh, drying winds. For optimal growth, plant in fertile, moist, non-alkaline soil. Enhance the soil before planting by incorporating plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring it’s thoroughly mixed in. Water regularly until the plants are well-established.
To protect the delicate buds from frost damage, leave the faded flower heads in place until new growth appears in spring. Prune after flowering to control the plant's size and improve its shape, reducing the stems as needed. If required, Hydrangea paniculata can withstand hard pruning, cutting back the oldest stems to just a few buds above ground level, which encourages the production of larger flower heads. After pruning, mulch around the base of the plant with well-rotted manure or compost.
