To protect delicate buds from frost damage, leave the faded flower heads until new growth appears in spring. Prune after flowering to control size and enhance the plant's shape. Hard pruning of the oldest stems can be tolerated, encouraging larger blooms. After pruning, mulch with well-rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant.
