Colour tones can vary slightly depending on soil pH, as with many varieties.
Hydrangea macrophylla thrives in a sunny or semi-shaded location, sheltered from cold, drying winds. Plant in rich, fertile, moist soil, improving it with well-rotted manure or garden compost mixed in thoroughly. Alternatively, use soil-based compost like John Innes No. 3 in patio containers. The blue flowers may develop a pink hue as they fade or be affected by alkaline tap water or soil. For the deepest blue flowers right through the season, it is recommended to use Hydrangea Colourant.
