Corylus avellana is a versatile and attractive deciduous tree that brings interest to the garden in every season. Soft yellow-green catkins appear in early spring, followed by broad summer foliage that forms a dense, natural screen. In autumn, the leaves turn golden before falling to reveal upright winter stems that give structure to the garden. As well as being ornamental, Hazel produces a generous crop of tasty cobnuts from September. It begins fruiting after three to four years and performs best with a pollination partner nearby. Highly valued by wildlife, it supports pollinators in spring and provides food for birds and squirrels later in the year.
