Grow your own delightful Gooseberry Giggles Red, supplied as 9cm potted plants ready for planting directly into your garden. These hardy shrubs flourish in a sunny or partially shaded spot, producing amazing medium-sized berries perfect for snacking.
For best results, plant gooseberry bushes in any well-drained soil enriched with a generous amount of well-rotted manure or garden compost. Ensure a spacing of 1.5m (5') between plants, maintaining the original planting depth as indicated by the mark left on the stem by the nursery soil. Remove any shoots or dormant buds from the base to prevent unwanted suckers.
Remember to water well during the first year to establish the plants fully, and keep the soil consistently moist during hot spells. Remove any suckers as they appear. Netting is recommended to protect the berries from birds.
Harvest some gooseberries in May for cooking and freezing, and allow the remaining fruit to ripen fully in June for fresh consumption. Prune gooseberry plants during winter, removing dead, damaged, and crossing stems, then thin the remaining stems to create an open, upright bush. Shorten the remaining stems by half. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the soil.
