For optimal growth, plant your gooseberry bushes in a sunny, open location with well-drained soil. Enrich the soil generously with well-rotted manure or garden compost before planting. Remove any shoots or dormant buds from the base to prevent unwanted suckers. Space the gooseberries 1.5m (5') apart, planting at the original depth indicated by the mark on the stem.

Water well for the first year until plants are fully established. Consistent watering is crucial during hot spells. Remove any suckers that emerge from the plant's base. Netting the bushes protects the developing fruit from birds. Harvest some gooseberries in May for cooking and freezing, allowing the remaining fruit to ripen fully for fresh eating in June. Prune during winter, removing dead, damaged, and crossing stems. Thin the remaining stems to create an open, upright bush and shorten them by half. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost.
