Plant your gooseberry bushes in a sunny, open location with well-drained soil. Enrich the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost before planting. Remove any shoots or dormant buds from the base to prevent unwanted suckers. Space the gooseberries 1.5m (5') apart, planting at the original depth indicated by the mark on the stem.

Prune gooseberry plants during winter. Remove dead, damaged, and crossing stems, then thin the remaining stems to create an open, upright bush. Shorten the remaining stems by half. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the soil.
