Prepare the planting hole with plenty of well-rotted manure or compost, and remember to stake the tree *before* planting to avoid root damage. Plant at the original soil level, secure it to the stake, and water thoroughly. Container-grown trees need regular feeding and watering. Pruning starts immediately after planting: remove the central stem above the highest side branch. For three years, trim the main branch tips by one-third each winter, aiming for six main branches. From year four, prune out some sub-branches at their base to encourage new growth. Thin the fruit in July, leaving two apples per cluster for the largest, best quality apples.
