The Gala apple tree is a popular choice, prized for its abundant harvests of large, red-blushed fruit and its reliable performance. Grown on dwarf rootstock, this tree offers the charm of a full-sized tree in a compact form, ideal for patios or mixed flowerbeds. Its low-maintenance nature ensures years of seasonal interest. Plant in a 60cm (2’) diameter container with John Innes No.3 compost, or in well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered spot. Plant at the original soil level, firm in, and water thoroughly. Containerised trees need regular feeding and watering. Pruning starts immediately after planting: remove the central stem above the highest side branch. For three years, prune the tips of main branches by one-third in winter, aiming for six main branches. From the fourth year, prune out some sub-branches at their union with the main branch to encourage new growth. Mature height: up to 1m; spread: up to 45cm.
